Squishpets

Cute pets that live on your web pages

Squishpets characters playing on a giant web browser window: a corgi, a bunny, a mummy, a ghost, a Bengal kitten, a lion cub and a penguin

It knows what’s on the page

Your pet looks at the layout of the page you show it: where the headings, pictures, videos and ads are. Then it decides what to do with them.

  • Eats ads

It finds the banners and chews them away, bite by bite. Send your pet home and they come back.

  • Naps on long reads

It curls up on a long article and snores quietly. Scroll fast and it wakes up.

  • Climbs your pictures

It jumps onto photos and peeks over the edge at you.

  • Watches videos

It sits on top of whatever’s playing. From level 5 it dances.

  • Watches you type

Start typing in a box and it comes over with its ears up.

  • Hugs what you select

Highlight some text and it runs over to hold it.

  • Spots prices

Shopping pages give it sparkly eyes.

  • Follows you around

It chases a slow cursor, flinches at a fast one and falls asleep when you stop moving.

Alive, not a loop

Most browser pets are a few drawings swapped in a loop. A Squishpet walks with a real stride, leaps between headings, tumbles when you throw it and lands with a squash. It picks what to do from the page itself: the ads, the cookie banner, the headline, the picture, the paragraph you're reading.

It also rides the page. Stand it on a heading, scroll gently and it goes along for the ride. Scroll hard and it loses its footing.

  1. Poke it for a squish and a boing.
  2. Click and hold to pet it. Hearts, purring, the works.
  3. Drag and let go to throw it. Throw hard enough and it gets dizzy.
  4. Double-click for a backflip, once it reaches level 2.

Questions

Is Squishpets free?

Yes. Mochi the bunny and Waffles the corgi are free with every feature: page reactions, friends on the page, levels, tricks and accessories. The other 25 characters cost $1 to $3 each, paid once.

Will it slow down my browser?

No. The pet uses about half a millisecond per frame on a typical page and stops completely when its tab is in the background.

Does it read my pages?

It looks at the layout of the page you bring it to, so it knows where the headings, pictures, videos and ads are. It doesn’t store or send any of it.

Does it remove ads for real?

It hides the ads it eats on the page you’re looking at, until you send your pet home. It isn’t an ad blocker: ads still load, and the next page has fresh ones for it to find.

Is it like Shimeji?

It's the same idea, a little character living on your screen, but it lives inside Chrome and reacts to what's on the page: it eats ads, steals headlines, naps on articles and plays with the other pets you bring.

Does it work on a school Chromebook?

Yes, if your school allows Chrome extensions. Some schools only allow extensions from an approved list, so the Add to Chrome button may be greyed out.

How do I send my pet home?

Click the Squishpets icon and choose Send home, or press Alt+Shift+P. Anything it ate comes back.
